I have never been very good at all the "girlie" stuff. I've never been good at accessorizing, I don't really care for shoe, clothes or handbag shopping and I have never been able to keep my nails looking nice for more than an hour after a manicure. Suffice it to say, my lack of girl qualities also lies in styling my hair. I hate the idea of spending more than the least amount of time possible getting ready in the morning. I know how to apply mousse, blow dry my hair and use a curling iron. I can use hot rollers, too, but that's about it. I can't seem to get the knack of using a paddle or roll brush while blowing my hair dry and a diffuser just drives me crazy. I have lived my life with no bangs, and hair long enough to put it in a pony tail.
When I moved to Louisville I was forced to find a new salon. I chose to go to the same one my husband does. I even see his stylist, David. It may seem odd that a husband and wife share the same hair stylist, but it works for us. The first time I met David I gave him the run down: nothing fancy, nothing that requires more work than a curling iron and I have to be able to put it in a pony tail. He will ask about length, highlights, and then gets to work. I have to say, I think I bore him a little. But David is sweet and we always have a good time talking about movies and the like.
Because of my simple style, I don't get my hair cut that often. I can go months without needing a trim. So...with spring finally sprung it was time for a visit to David. I went in Friday and told David to give me the usual. He was feeling saucy and asked about a new style. A new style? I reminded him of my requirements and he assured me the new look would accommodate. I walked out 30 minutes later washed, rinsed, trimmed and blown dry. It's a little shorter than usual, a bit of subtle layering and a little bouncier. I knew it worked for me when Chad said, "it looks nice--I can actually tell you got it cut." Wow. My honey sure knows how to get my heart all a-flutter. So here's to spring--new life, new flowers, new leaves and new hair styles.

Most Folks...

Abraham Lincoln has been quoted as saying, "Most folks are about as happy as they make their minds up to be." I've known this quote most of my life. I grew up in Santa Claus, Indiana and just West of my small town was an even smaller one, Lincoln City. Lincoln City's claim to fame is it is where Abe lived from the age of seven to 21. It has a national park, an amphitheater and that's about it. Many times I went to the national park on a class field trip and viewed an incredibly stimulating film called, "Here I Grew Up." I even spent a summer as a singer/dancer/actress in the production of Young Abe Lincoln. With all this exposure, I was sure to run across several of his famous sayings. This one has always stuck with me. I even have a Mary Englebright print hanging in my kitchen with the quote.
With all that said, I have to wonder how many people truly understand its meaning. I'm no authority on Abe, but I can tell you what it means to me. I've had a lot of twist and turns in my life--some good, some bad. Looking back, I know that the path I've taken has led me here-- to this place, to this life. I have my good days and my bad. Whatever the day, I try to remember Lincoln's bit of wisdom. I can either wallow in my frustrations, guilt, anger or grief (which face it, sometimes I am known to do) or I can look around at all of my blessings and be happy. It's not always easy, but its worth a try.
So...what's this blog all about? To be honest, I'm not sure. I guess we'll see what happens. I'll try to keep the focus on the good, the funny and the silly things of the world and leave everything else to someone else.
